"What does it say, can you read it?" is a common greeting for some people, part of a regional dialect somewhere, in the cinematic universe where The Stack Overflow Exception exists. It's also what modern viewers might ask each other regarding writing that appears on signs, packaging, and newspapers throughout the picture, written in an odd though somehow instantly familiar character set.

I was first introduced to the Shavian alphabet by a microblog entry Stephen Fry posted some years ago which included a photograph of a postcard he'd received at the BBC with Shavian writing on it and a request for assistance in identifying the lettering. The strange language turned out to be English written in this alternate alphabet commissioned by George Bernard Shaw in his will. Never one to turn down a gift from a literary icon, I immediately adopted the way of writing as the standard in the cinematic universe forming in my mind.

Common Brands

What would any popular TV program of a retro-futurist alternate universe be without product placement, so several brands can be seen in various scenes, to help define the other-worldly environment for the characters, and build brand awareness in the audience to help sell whatever the program is selling.

Compound Slang

The slang used by characters throughout the film is based on the common sayings of a certain French filmmaker persona of mine. Pierre is the kind of person who is perfectly content with himself despite the fact that the negative and all known prints of his masterpieces are in a boat at the bottom of the sea. He pops up when I need moral support for my own endeavors, only to shower me with insults. Don't like it? Put it inside of yourself; s'ok.
